Phenylalanine is an amino acid, a "building block" of protein. There are three forms of phenylalanine: D-phenylalanine, L-phenylalanine, and the mix made in the laboratory called DL-phenylalanine. D-phenylalanine is not an essential amino acid, and its role in people is not currently understood. L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and is the only form of phenylalanine found in proteins.
Phenylalanine is used for depression, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Parkinson's disease, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and a skin disease called vitiligo.
HEALTH BENEFITS: 1. In vitiligo: Taking L-phenylalanine by mouth in combination with UVA exposure or applying L-phenylalanine to the skin in combination with UVA exposure seems to be effective for treating vitiligo in adults and in children.
2. In Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Some research suggests that patients with ADHD have lower levels of amino acids such as phenylalanine, so there was hope that providing phenylalanine might treat ADHD.
3. In Pain management: Some research suggests the D-form of phenylalanine may contribute to pain relief in some instances.
4. In Alcohol withdrawal: A small amount of research indicates that this amino acid, along with other amino acids, may help alleviate symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
5. In Parkinson’s disease: Very limited evidence suggests that phenylalanine may be beneficial in treating Parkinson’s disease, but more studies are needed.
6. In Depression: Phenylalanine can be used to produce the molecule dopamine. Dopamine malfunction in the brain is associated with some forms of depression. Hence, phenylalanine intake may reduce the recurrence of Depression.
7. In weight loss: By decreasing food cravings, an individual may be able to reduce the daily amount of food they consume, and hence decrease their total caloric intake. If the individual decrease their daily caloric intake to a level that is below their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), then they will begin to lose weight.
